🍲 Homemade Chicken and Dumplings Recipe
Warm, comforting, and full of flavor — this classic Chicken and Dumplings is the ultimate cozy meal!
🐔 Ingredients
For the Chicken Soup:
2 cups cooked shredded chicken
4 cups chicken broth
1 cup milk or heavy cream
2 tablespoons butter
1 small onion, diced
2 celery stalks, sliced (optional)
1–2 teaspoons garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1 teaspoon dried thyme
Salt and pepper, to taste
For the Dumplings:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
4 tablespoons melted butter
👩🍳 Instructions
Step 1: Make the Soup Base
- In a large pot, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the onion (and celery, if using) and sauté until softened and fragrant.
- Pour in the chicken broth and bring it to a gentle simmer.
- Stir in the shredded chicken, garlic powder, onion powder, thyme, salt, and pepper.
- Add the milk or heavy cream and stir well to create a rich, creamy base.
Step 2: Make the Dumplings
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Pour in the milk and melted butter.
- Stir gently until a soft, sticky dough forms — don’t overmix, or the dumplings may turn tough.
Step 3: Add the Dumplings
- Drop spoonfuls of the dough directly into the simmering soup. (You can use a small cookie scoop or tablespoon.)
- Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and do not lift it for 15 minutes — the steam is what cooks the dumplings perfectly.
- After 15 minutes, check that the dumplings are puffed, fluffy, and cooked through.
🌿 To Serve
Gently stir the pot and taste for seasoning. Add more salt, pepper, or herbs as needed.
Serve hot in bowls — each spoonful should have tender chicken, creamy broth, and a soft dumpling!
💡 Tips for Perfect Dumplings
Keep the lid closed while cooking the dumplings — lifting it releases the steam.
For extra flavor, add a bay leaf or a pinch of poultry seasoning to the broth.
You can use rotisserie chicken to make this dish even faster.
