Classic Christmas Cookies

Ingredients:

•⁠ ⁠2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
•⁠ ⁠1 teaspoon baking soda
•⁠ ⁠½ teaspoon baking powder
•⁠ ⁠1 cup unsalted butter, softened
•⁠ ⁠1 ½ cups white sugar
•⁠ ⁠1 egg
•⁠ ⁠1 teaspoon vanilla extract
•⁠ ⁠½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
•⁠ ⁠3 to 4 tablespoons buttermilk
•⁠ ⁠Assorted colored sugar or sprinkles for decorating

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking soda, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract if using.
  4. Gradually blend in the dry ingredients. Add buttermilk as needed to moisten the dough so it is soft but not sticky.
  5. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place onto ungreased cookie sheets.
  6. Flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of a glass and decorate with colored sugar or sprinkles.
  7. Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until edges are golden. Let cool on wire racks.
